Groprinosin is an over-the-counter (OTC) product which contains the active substance inosine pranobex, which acts as both an antiviral agent and an immune system enhancer.
Indications
Groprinosin is primarily used to help the body fight off certain viral infections, particularly as a supportive treatment in patients with reduced immunity. Indications include:
- Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections.
- Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, such as cold sores and facial or genital herpes.
- Other viral conditions, including chicken pox, herpes zoster, cytomegalovirus infections, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections (genital warts).
- Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, a severe complication of measles.
How It Works
The active ingredient, inosine pranobex, works through a dual mechanism:
Immune System Stimulation: It enhances the activity of key white blood cells (like T-lymphocytes) and increases the production of cytokines, which strengthens the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
It slows the spread of the virus within the body.
Contraindications
– Hypersensitivity to any component
– Acute gout attack, as well as patients with elevated uric acid levels in the blood and urine
– Urolithiasis
– Pregnancy and lactation
– Children under 6 years of age
Dosage
The dose is determined based on the patient’s body weight and the severity of the disease.
For adults, including the elderly, the recommended daily dose is 50 mg/kg body weight, i.e., 6 to 8 tablets or 2 tablets 3-4 times daily. The maximum dose is 4 g per day (8 tablets).
For oral use only. For easier administration, tablets can be crushed and dissolved in a small amount of water.
The daily dose should be divided into equal parts and taken several times a day.
Treatment duration is typically 5-14 days. Dosage should be continued for an additional 1-2 days after symptoms subside.
Store at temperatures not exceeding 25°C.
